Tom, Task 2

Zed Nelson- Gun Nation:

For my in depth study on Zed Nelson, i chose this image because it is the most iconic. It was taken on the 16/12/2009 and is of a Los Angeles father teaching his 9 year old son how to shoot a gun. He has chosen to try and show people how relaxed gun control has become and I think it is supposed to shock people. The image is in black and white and i think it makes the picture a lot more striking, it also means that the colour doesn't distract from what the images is supposed to portray. The picture is taken from behind the boy, probably so we can see the range and how the father is holding the child. This shows me that the father is very controlling and likes to guide his son. The text that came with the image didn't tell me much, just who was in it, what was going on and when it was taken. It doesn't show much opinion as I think Nelson left it open for the viewer to judge on. This image was originally created for Nelson's book but was probably also used in a gun campaign.

August Sander- 20th Century Man:

This image from Sanders really shows the story of the man. There weren't any annotations to this image, but I think it can still show the story of the man. From the image i can tell that the man isn't poor like a lot of the people Sanders photographed, from the way he's dressed and how big he is. I can guess from his dog that he is some form of hunter because German Shepards always make good hunting dogs. This also goes with the woodland background. The image is also in black and white, I think partly because of the time it was taken and also because with the colour there might be too much in the image, distracting the viewer from the main subject and his dog. Sanders created this set of images for a gallery and later published them into a book, and in my opinion the image is extremely good at telling us a lot about the person without really having anything to indicate who he is.

Mathew Brady- Civil War:

This image is of an officer in the civil war, him and his horse look very proud, giving us the impression of leadership, power and wisdom. The image is a portrait with a focus on the officer and his horse, however it didn't come with text so we don't know anything about him. The photo is in sepia which shows the time when it was taken and I think the Brady was trying to show the age in the photograph and how times have changed. I think he is trying to tell us about the officer, that he has power in the army, and that he should be respected by the way he is looking out across the landscape. This particular image was meant for a book that Brady published and is different to the other 2 photographer I have covered because his images aren't in black and white.
